OUR STORY

Who we are

Who we are

In 2004 the Leaderbrand family decided that it was time for a change. We pooled our interests, talents and money together to build a family owned and, operated business or as our permit says, a Small Farm Winery.

It was important to create the Farm Winery together so it reflected ourselves and interests. We decided collectively what grapes to grow, and what our personal mission would be followed throughout its growth.

Practically poetic is how the agriculture "traditions” from Bonnie and Preston combined with vision and conscience of Jo Anna and Anthony, and the youth of Cody and Connor can unite three generations.

Through an extensive search in southern Indiana, land was purchased in three miles south of Spencer Indiana in Owen County. This area is commonly known by the locals as Owen Valley providing the ultimate combination of terroir for wine production and tourism aesthetics.

In 2005, Leaderbrand Vineyards LLC was formed, and in 2006 we formed Owen Valley Winery LLC.

Our Story
Mission

Mission

Owen Valley Winery is a country farm winery dedicated to growing quality grapes, and producing celebrated wines. Our passion in community growth, environmental sustainability, and family values is where we forge our success. We are proud to promote, and represent Owen County in the state of Indiana.

Solar

Solar

In October 2013 we installed a 8.5 KW PV system to offset over 65% of the winery’s annual electric load.

This solar array is saving the winery thousands of dollars over its projected 30 year service life, and will provide significant, long lasting environmental benefits for the winery and community as well.

Each KwH of electricity produced by the system offsets about 1.74 lbs of climate-changing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). The system is projected to produce at least 12000 KwH per year for an annual offset of over 20,000 lbs of GHG and a lifetime offset potential of over 600,000 Lbs of GHG over 30 years.

The system will be monitored for 24/7 real-time and historic energy production accessible over the internet providing valuable educational and environmental information for the winery and the community.

As our business grows, so will our scope to give more to the community.

As a FOR profit small business, we take great pride knowing that the taxes collected from our business benefit the community in many ways.

We are certainly interested in discussing creative opportunities that Owen Valley Winery and your organization can partner make a successful event for all.

A great example is how Owen Valley Winery can host a fundraiser here at the winery and both can benefit in the opportunity.

Here is a statement from its organizer of the Horse-Angels, Horse Rescue Benefit.

We had a very successful and enjoyable event! Owen Valley Winery staff were enthusiastic and completely accommodating; The property was beautiful. The outdoor green space made a comfortable, inviting setting for the tents with tables and chairs, all in close proximity to the tasting room and the band!

Thank you so much for the use of your charming winery facility and grounds! Linda Rakowski, Volunteer for Horse-Angels Horse Rescue

Indiana Uplands Wine Trail

Indiana Uplands Wine Trail

For decades, we’ve produced special wines in south-central Indiana. These days, it’s official.

The Indiana Uplands is a federally recognized grape-growing region, known as an American Viticultural Area, or AVA. In fact, ours is the first AVA entirely in Indiana, established in early 2013.

With 4,800 square miles to our name, 17 wineries and 19 vineyards with about 200 acres under cultivation, there’s much to explore. And, there’s room to grow.

Nine wineries are members of the Indiana Uplands Wine Trail, a way to get a taste of the Indiana Uplands AVA.

An AVA means that the region has a unique blend of geography, soil and climate, which gives its wine defining character. Simply put, the Indiana Uplands is markedly different from its surroundings when it comes to growing grapes.

LOCAL GRAPES

The Indiana Uplands AVA gives our wines a true origin. Vintners have a meaningful way to describe where their wines come from, and wine-drinkers can easily spot local varietals at stores and restaurants.

When you see the Indiana Uplands name on a bottle, it means that at least 85 percent of the wine inside is from grapes grown within the area.

LOCATION

Where is the Indiana Uplands AVA? Think of the region as a vertical rectangle in the south-central part of the state. But, we can certainly be more specific: The Indiana Uplands AVA spans 110 miles north to south, bound to the north by the line that separates Morgan and Monroe counties and to the south by the Ohio River at the Kentucky border. At its widest point, the region is 63 miles across, from Clark County to Martin County.  The Indiana Uplands AVA spreads across 19 counties.

Geographically, the area has been known as the Indiana Uplands since 1920, making it a fitting name for the grape-growing region, too.
